Lead 101: Intro to Lead Climbing

This 2-part class is designed to teach participants the necessary knowledge in order to best their odds of passing our lead climbing test.

Sometimes referred to as “sport climbing”, lead climbing is another form of rope climbing that is possible on most of our taller walls. When lead climbing, a rope does not hang from the top of the wall. Instead, the rope starts at the base of the wall and the climber clips it into protection points as they climb.

Since lead climbing is a potential next step for an experienced top rope climber, Intro to Lead Climbing is designed for those climbers who feel ready to take their rope climbing skills to the next level (please see the prerequisites tab for more information) . In this course, one of our expert instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of lead climbing and belaying in a safe and supportive environment.

NOTE:

This class requires a minimum of 2 participants and participants must be present for both classes. We will contact you to reschedule your class no later then 24 hours in advance if less than 2 participants are registered.
24 hours after completion of this 2-part class, participants will be eligible to take our lead test.

Recognize essential safety fundamentals of lead climbing and the associated risks.
Exhibit knowledge of the equipment involved and required for lead climbing.
Demonstrate proper lead belaying techniques, including rope management.
Application of proper technique while practicing lead falls as both belayer and climber.
Perform various clipping scenarios and safe rope management while climbing.
Communicate effectively as both a climber and a belayer.
Recognize proper lead climbing etiquette in the gym.

Must be top-rope certified with Mesa Rim.
All participants must be at least 14 years of age.
Reservations can be made online (recommended).
Drop-ins are welcome (only if spots are available).
Please arrive 15 minutes early to gear up.

This is an intermediate course for climbers who have six (6) months of climbing and top rope belaying experience.
Recommended that participants feel confident executing climbing moves as hard as 5.10a without resting on a variety of climbing terrain.
Climbing is a physically demanding activity that carries inherent risks. Please follow instructions carefully, use the provided equipment correctly, and respect the rules and guidelines of the climbing facility.

Participants are advised to wear athletic clothing (breathable and stretchy) and must bring water and or snacks to the session.

To receive a full refund, cancellation requests must be made at least 15 days before the date of the event you have registered. If cancellation is made within 14 days of registered event, the options are:

Change the date to a later event (if space is available)
Receive a credit toward other programs
Receive a 50% refund
