Intro to Crack Climbing

Intro to Crack Climbing

Early climbers found their way to the top of rock features by jamming their hands, feet, and bodies—eventually, pounding pitons for protection—into naturally occurring cracks that ran through impressive walls of granite, sandstone, and other rocks. Now categorized under the discipline of traditional or “trad” climbing, crack climbing is still a common and popular form of climbing in places like Joshua Tree and Yosemite whose cracks provide paths to the top of otherwise blank walls of granite. For an outdoor climber interested in the “trad” discipline, crack climbing is an essential skill that can be utilized at many of our local climbing areas and at our indoor cracks at Mesa Rim. Intro to Crack Climbing will introduce you to the art of hand jamming, foot jamming, and other foundational crack climbing skills. In this 2.5-hour class, one of our experienced instructors will guide you through the basics of crack climbing in a supportive environment while utilizing the various cracks built into our climbing walls.

  • Recognize the basic tenets of crack climbing including the significance of cracks in both indoor and outdoor settings, where cracks can be found in the gym, and foundational crack climbing terminology.

  • Apply basic hand, foot, and body jamming techniques to various-sized cracks in the gym.

  • Discover intuitive climbing techniques that will help ease of movement while crack climbing.

  • Identify how crack climbing gear and tape can aid in crack climbing efficiency and also help to reduce pain.
