Outdoor Approach: Cleaning and Lowering

Outdoor Approach: Cleaning and Lowering

Outdoor Approach: Cleaning and Lowering courses are designed for the experienced climber who wants to expand their knowledge of climbing to the outdoors. In this 3-hour course, an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor will teach you about fundamental systems and techniques for climbing outside, including how to "clean" and lower from bolted anchors. This course does not cover traditional (trad) anchors, placements, or climbing techniques.

Disclaimer: This course will be taught on indoor walls and in a controlled environment, therefore, the nuances of climbing on real rock will be discussed but not practiced. Mesa Rim recommends using this course as a starting point and seeking out professional outdoor guiding services and/or mentorship before climbing alone. This course will not cover the placement and application of traditional climbing gear. The learning objectives for participants of this course are to:

  • Gain familiarity with common fixed anchor components such as bolts, hangers, quick links, chains, mussy hooks, and rap rings
  • Gain familiarity with outdoor fixed anchor component assessment
  • Gain familiarity with common anchor building materials and tools
  • Understand and be able to tie a variety of fundamental knots and hitches used in anchor building
  • Understand and build common climbing anchors for bolted anchors
  • Understand how to clean and lower from bolted anchors
